Writer's Block: Cinco de Mayo

Are you celebrating Cinco de Mayo?

Si! I always do something for Cinco de Mayo even though I've always understood that it's more a Mexican-American holiday than an important Mexican holiday. (I believe Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday in Mexico. Their actual indepence day is in September.)

It's quite popular in Texas. The only place that celebrates it in Mexico is in Puebla, Puebla.

Makes sense that it's celebrated in Puebla, as that's where that particular battle was fought.

I was told that this holiday was promoted in California because Mexican Indepence Day (Sept. 16th) was too close to California Admission Day (Sept. 9th)

California Admission Day used to be a big deal. I remember getting the day off from school because of it, but that was decades ago. I don't hear much (anything) about it anymore.

many 'Californios' also have old relatives whom participated/faoght in that war....so it's remanence still carries.

Still, for most in California, it is just another excuse to drink muchos bisos and tequila too! Americans love to drink afterall (and not just the Mexican-Americans), don't they?

I wonder what alcohol sales are like on this day?? Hmmm

I'm not sure what the alcohol sales are like, but I do know it's one of the top two days for guacamole sales!

The other is Superbowl Sunday. I forget which is number 1 and which is number 2, though.
